Time To Stop Reinventing The Wheel

Reinvent the wheel

“It’s easier to just do it myself”

How often have you said those words? Explaining the required steps to complete a task can seem more cumbersome than just handling it — especially when you include a quality-check, fix any errors and provide feedback. And (even if we don’t like to admit it), many of us like handling those easy tasks because they produce a sense of accomplishment — even if they’re not the pressing items we should be focused on.

The ugly truth: Doing everything yourself will ensure that your business won’t scale to the next level.

How did I do that again?

The words above are another common refrain for many of us. When a task is simple, you are certain you’ll remember how to do it the next time. If something is an absolute bear to figure out, you figure there’s no way you’ll ever forget. But our brains are deluged with input and can actually become overloaded, making seemingly basic tasks not just complicated, but frustrating and overwhelming. (more…)

Do Your Website Visitors Hate Your Content?

feeding content

Is your website content attracting visitors or repelling them?

A client considering a website redesign requested I review the effectiveness of their current site. Developed by a web hosting company that specializes in the client’s niche, the site was built from a template which included industry-relevant copy, with designated fields to “personalize” the site.

The client and I were in agreement that the website wasn’t particularly compelling or effective. (more…)

Quality content that captivates, informs or amuses is step one. Consistent, intentional posting and authentic engagement — step two.

Depending on your industry and target client, you might also consider additional steps  (more…)

Are You Having a Facebook Identity Crisis?

Confused identity crisis

Did I just comment as myself or my business page?

Mistakes happen. Whether you stress over them or take them in stride, it’s important to avoid repeating the error. If you’re a page admin for a business Facebook page, chances are you’ve liked, commented or shared a post as your Page when you intended to do so as yourself. Or perhaps you meant your Page to share an update from another business page, but somehow the share defaulted to your personal account. The process can be pretty convoluted — and frustrating.

If Facebook has proven a successful channel for your business, don’t count it out just because it’s complicated. As a page admin on a Facebook account, always double-check to confirm whether you’re posting as yourself or your Page. Here’s how:  (more…)

Yep, it’s January — resolution time. Whether you are a resolutions believer or can’t be bothered, the start of a new year provides a fitting opportunity to assess your past activities and commit to greater effectiveness going forward.

Reflecting on the past year of long hours without much downtime, many business owners resolve to seek more balance in the new year. Making that goal a reality requires a behavior shift.

When feeling overwhelmed, it’s human nature to engage in familiar, routine tasks that provide a sense of accomplishment. But like a gerbil on an exercise wheel, blindly running in circles doesn’t move us forward. (more…)
