A client considering a website redesign requested I review the effectiveness of their current site. Developed by a web hosting company that specializes in the client’s niche, the site was built from a template which included industry-relevant copy, with designated fields to “personalize” the site.
In fact, the resulting site was impersonal, perfunctory and no more engaging than a Yellow Pages listing. The user experience was inefficient and cumbersome, and the images (obviously stock photos) neither reinforced the copy nor enhanced the client’s credibility. Yep, it’s January — resolution time. Whether you are a resolutions believer or can’t be bothered, the start of a new year provides a fitting opportunity to assess your past activities and commit to greater effectiveness going forward.
Reflecting on the past year of long hours without much downtime, many business owners resolve to seek more balance in the new year. Making that goal a reality requires a behavior shift.
When feeling overwhelmed, it’s human nature to engage in familiar, routine tasks that provide a sense of accomplishment. But like a gerbil on an exercise wheel, blindly running in circles doesn’t move us forward. (more…)
Do you track your daily activity using a FitBit or similar device? If so, there may be times when outlier activities — like a wobbling grocery cart — are counted as steps. You may have wondered about the extra activity, or perhaps you are guiltily aware while treating yourself to an extra dessert (since you did all those steps!). Obviously, the steps aren’t valid and the inflated stats may actually be causing you to eat more.
The same principle can apply to your website visits, where there may also be extra steps which you didn’t earn. Monitoring your analytics is key to measuring the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. But a cursory glance at the top-level stats (like the 16,432 steps) isn’t enough. (more…)
As the year’s end approaches, we like to reflect back, focusing on successes and noting those pesky “opportunities” for doing better in the new year. While there’s not always enduring discipline around personal resolutions, from a business perspective we engage in intentional reflection. Similar to applying marketing intelligence to inform future marketing efforts, intentional reflection uses the wisdom gained from honest assessment of past activities to make purposeful changes.
